We are inviting UK and international artists to submit short proposals in response to this residency opportunity on waterways in two cities, Venice, Italy and Cardiff, UK.
The residency is a special opportunity for an experienced artist to research and devise new work in response to the historic inland canals network to which these port cities are connected.
This opportunity is part of a broader series of artists’ residencies conceived and developed jointly by the Arts Council of Wales, Glandŵr Cymru (the Canal & Trust in Wales) and the curating agency Addo. The aim is to contribute to the cultural significance of canals in Wales and their relevance to local communities and contemporary Welsh culture. The residencies also aim to develop artists’ roles in animating and re-interpreting the waterways.
The successful artist will be linked to two innovative arts organisations in each city: Bevilacqua La Masa, a leading arts space in Venice, and Chapter Arts Centre, a leading cultural space in Cardiff.
From May – November 2016, the artist will develop ideas in response to the waterways in these two very different European cities with different waterway legacies. They will not be expected to spend the entire period traveling between the two cities, but the commissioning partners are looking for a strong commitment and deep curiosity to explore common and divergent themes suggested in this brief and to develop work for a future exhibition.
Accommodation:
Bevilacqua La Masa will provide accommodation at Palazzo Carminati for a three-month period during September-November 2016 , with internet access; administrative and staff support, including introductions to the Venetian art community; studio and other visits; space to conduct research and meet with others; and an opportunity to give a talk/event. The package is worth 12,000 Euros.
Chapter will be the artistic base for the artist offering support and guidance. The artist will make two visits to Chapter, each of 2-3 weeks in duration, between May and August 2016. It is expected that the artist will present work in progress and deliver a talk about the residency experience but the outcomes of the residency can be developed in dialogue with the curatorial team. Chapter will provide both studio and residential accommodation during the artist’s visits to Cardiff. The residential accommodation will be off-site but will be organised close to Chapter.

In addition the artist will be paid a bursary of £7,500.
