We are pleased to announce that the second pair of resident artists have began their month-long residencies at the forge at Gefail yr Ynys, Caernarfon. Pairing a local Gwynedd-based artist with someone from further afield the residencies involve skills exchange and an opportunity to work with local groups and communities.

Robin Richards

Robin is a contemporary composer and multi-instrumentalist in Manchester based band Dutch Uncles. He is interested in collaboration with other artists and immersing himself in a theme or a space to create new works. Many of his pieces are built on rhythmic, melodic and mathematical themes, and a chance to incorporate some of these into a space with sonic potential and historical prevalence like Gefail was what appealed to him to apply for the residency.

Robin says After hearing about the artist in residence opportunity at Gefail yr Ynys and having worked in collaborations before with film makers and other musicians, the chance to work with different artists and community groups in a venue of such historical significance was very appealing. I am always looking for new projects to experiment with my compositional styles and this new venture is unlike anything I have done before.

Mike Murray

Mike is a mixed media sculptor based in Arfon, Gwynedd. As a sculptor he has worked with process and movement. During the residency he will be exploring different types of pre-film animation devices (including thaumatropes and zoetropes) and aims to realise some of these designs using recycled bike parts, metal and other media.

Mike says, ‘Gefail Yr Ynys has excited me from its original conception. I have closely followed the development of the building since moving up from Cardiff two years ago. Having graduated from Cardiff School of Art and Design in 2000 in Sculpture, I had a good foundation in metal – at the time the course was sponsored by Corus Steel. Through working at Gefail Yr Ynys, I am hoping to challenge and develop my skills further through the language of recycled metal and early animation’.

Rydym yn falch o gyhoeddi bod yr ail bâr o artistiaid preswyl wedi dechrau ar eu cyfnod preswyl, mis o hyd, yn yr efail yng Ngefail yr Ynys, Caernarfon. Mae paru artist lleol o Wynedd â rhywun sy’n byw yn bell i ffwrdd mewn cyfnod preswyl yn golygu cyfnewid sgiliau a chyfle i weithio gyda grwpiau a chymunedau lleol.

Robin Richards

Cyfansoddwr cyfoes sy’n chwarae sawl offeryn yn Dutch Uncles, y band o Fanceinion, yw Robin. Mae ganddo ddiddordeb mewn cydweithio ag artistiaid eraill a throchi ei hun mewn thema neu le i greu gweithiau newydd. Mae llawer o’i ddarnau wedi’u creu ar themâu rhythmig, melodig a mathemategol. Roedd y cyfle i ymgorffori rhai o’r rhain mewn lle gyda photensial sonig a chyffredinolrwydd hanesyddol fel Gefail yn apelio ato ac yn ei hybu i wneud cais am y cyfnod preswyl.

Dywed Robin “Ar ôl clywed am y cyfle i artist preswyl yng Ngefail yr Ynys, a minnau wedi cydweithio o’r blaen gyda gwneuthurwyr ffilmiau a cherddorion eraill, roedd y cyfle i weithio gydag artistiaid a grwpiau cymunedol gwahanol mewn lleoliad sydd mor hanesyddol arwyddocaol yn apelio yn fawr. Rwyf bob amser yn chwilio am brosiectau newydd i arbrofi â nhw o ran fy nulliau cyfansoddi ac mae’r fenter newydd hon yn wahanol i unrhyw beth a wnes i o’r blaen.”

Mike Murray

Cerflunydd cyfryngau cymysg yw Mike, ac yn gweithio yn Arfon, Gwynedd. Fel cerflunydd, bu’n gweithio gyda phroses a symudiad. Yn ystod y cyfnod preswyl, bydd yn edrych ar wahanol fathau o ddyfeisiadau animeiddio cyn-ffilm (gan gynnwys thaumatropau a soetropau), gyda’r nod o wireddu rhai o’r dyluniadau hyn gan ddefnyddio metel, cyfryngau eraill a darnau beic wedi’u hailgylchu.

Dywed Mike, “Mae gefail yr Ynys wedi fy nghyffroi ers y cychwyn cyntaf. Bum yn dilyn datblygu’r adeilad yn agos ers i mi symud i fyny o Gaerdydd ddwy flynedd yn ôl. Roedd gen i sylfaen dda mewn metel gan i mi raddio mewn Cerflunio o Ysgol Celf a Dylunio Caerdydd yn 2000 – ar y pryd, Corus Steel oedd yn noddi’r cwrs. Trwy weithio yng Ngefail yr Ynys, y gobaith yw y byddaf yn herio fy sgiliau, a’u datblygu ymhellach trwy iaith metel wedi’i ailgylchu ac animeiddio cynnar”.
